unboxing: Fast Forward F6R Powertap wheelset

Posted by on May 16, 2013 in bikes, gear and gadgets | 0 comments

I order almost all of my bike stuff online: it’s convenient, I can find everything I want and most items arrive within a week. Then the exciting part: receiving a parcel, finding out it is the one you’ve been waiting for, opening it and then admiring the product you just bought (except for actually using it afterwards maybe..)! Yes, unboxing is clearly one of my favorite activities. This time I ordered a Fast Forward hand built wheelset with Powertap hub. Now that I’m training with the help of a cycling coach, I really want to be able to measure the power output. The parcel arrived, so let’s start unboxing!...

Bike ride near Terrasini (PA) in March 2013

I decided to go and do the L5 ride on again a lovely sunny day in March this year. Not the best day to set a personal record: there are two railroad crossings, one in Trappeto and one near Terrasini (see photo) and I had to wait at both for the train to pass. The spectators clearly weren’t impressed with my efforts on the bike, so they went on with their...

On my favorite climb, near Carini (PA)

The climb near the town of Carini (PA) is one of my favorites: not because of the level of difficulty (it’s mostly 5 – 7%), but because of the route itself: you start near the town, ride to the castle in the “centro storico” of Carini and then follow for Montelepre. During the climb you have some great views of the town and the sea. This is a ride a do a lot as a cycling guide (see route L5 on the on-Sicily website), because halfway on the descent you’ll have the choice to either turn right and go home (following the route) or go straight ahead and do...

Bike ride to Piana degli Albanesi

Posted by on May 15, 2013 in cycling and bike pics | 0 comments

Since the end of 2012 I’m taking lots of pictures during bike rides, but I have been working on this blog for only a few days now. So I have some catching up to do! This photo was taken on a bike ride from Balestrate to Piana deglia Albanesi (wiki / google maps). It’s a nice ride with a not so steep climb (max around 7%) starting near Lago Poma and through the town of San Giuseppe Jato. Before arriving at the town of Piana deglia Albanesi you’ll pass the monument at Portella della Ginestra (google maps). On May 1, 1947, 11 people were killed and 27 wounded during...

My quest to find Castelli free aero race gloves

Posted by on May 13, 2013 in bikes, gear and gadgets | 0 comments

A few years ago Castelli made some excellent gloves, the Aero race gloves. Besides the team version, they came in black a and white and black and red. The black and red gloves could be combined with a black and jersey and the team version of the Free Aero Race bibshort. When used almost every day they had to be replaced every now and then, so every year I bought a few new pairs. Then all of a sudden the gloves were out of stock in every online store I usually ordered from! I found out that my favorite gloves were replaced by a Free Aero Race glove with...
