The Garmin Edge 1030 and thick winter gloves…

The Garmin Edge 1030 and thick winter gloves…

As you may have seen, I’m on a holiday in The Netherlands and I brought my winter cycling kits with me. During a ride I got a message on my Edge 1030, telling me that the Virb battery was low. Because this message was blocking the entire screen, I tried to click it away with my Castelli Estremo glove, but alas, nothing happened. Clicking or swiping didn’t do a thing. Instead of taking off the glove I came up with a pro tip: Pro tip: thick gloves and @Garmin Edge 1030 are not a good match. You can swipe or press all you want, but nothing will happen. Stop this madness, use your tongue instead (probably not a good idea when the Edge is still on your handlebar mount…)! pic.twitter.com/sURraeIjaK — Don Bici (@Don_Bici) October 31, 2018 The guys at Garmin got back to me and told me to try and changing the touch sensitivity of the screen. Hi Don! Love the pro tip, but there could be a...

My review of the Garmin Varia RTL510 radar tail light (update)

My review of the Garmin Varia RTL510 radar tail light (update)

In my review of the Garmin Varia RTL510 radar tail light I wrote about the issues I had with the radar draining the battery of my Edge 810. Now that I have the Edge 1030, it’s time for a quick update. Garmin Edge battery life when using the radar: The biggest issue I had when using the radar was the short time it took to completely drain the battery of my Edge 810. This is what I wrote about it in my previous post: As mentioned above, one of the cons is definitely the fact that using the radar drains the battery of my Garmin very fast! I’ve tested the battery life with and without connecting the two VIRB cameras, but it’s clear that it’s the RTL510 that causes the battery level to drop in an alarming rate. After 1.5 hours om the bike, the level will drop to about 67% and about three hours into a ride my Garmin has less than 40% left. When I did a...

My review of the Garmin Varia RTL510 radar tail light

My review of the Garmin Varia RTL510 radar tail light

As I mentioned in my post Testing my two Garmin Virb Ultra 30 cameras, I’ve been thinking more and more about the safety aspects of riding my bike, since I was hit by a car from behind last January. Due to wind noise, I didn’t notice the car until he hit me. I would have noticed that car much sooner, if I’d already had a Garmin Varia RTL510 radar tail light. I recently bought one and I love it! In this review I’ll let you know why and I’ll show you what’s in the box, how you attach the radar to the seat post, how to connect the unit to your Edge, how and when the radar works (and when it doesn’t) and the pros and cons of the RTL510. If you’d like to buy one, you can get just the light or a bundle containing the light and a small display. I chose to buy the light and control it with my Garmin Edge 810. Let’s unbox the...

Testing my two Garmin Virb Ultra 30 cameras

Testing my two Garmin Virb Ultra 30 cameras

Since my last accident I’ve been thinking more and more about the safety aspects of cycling. There were no witnesses of the accident in January, so it took a lot of time and effort to prove that the driver actually hit me. I’m pretty sure that we wouldn’t have had any discussions if I had a video of what actually happened that day. At that time I only had one camera, but I forgot to bring my bike mount from Sicily, so when I went out for a bike ride I had no camera on my bike. Because I was hit from behind, a camera on the front would not have been enough to show what had happened or to avoid discussions. That’s why I decided I needed a second camera to film everything behind me. There are several mounts on the Garmin website, but for attaching a camera to your seatpost, there’s only one option, the Virb tube mount. This mount is as bulky as it looked on...

Coming back from an accident – learning from my mistakes

Coming back from an accident – learning from my mistakes

Last January I was hit by a car while cycling on a small country road. This was the second bike accident in 2.5 years that left me badly injured, so again, I had to start a rehabilitation process to get back into shape. After the first accident I made many mistakes that didn’t help me get back into shape, so this time I decided to change my approach. I’d like to share with you what I think I did wrong the first time and what has helped me so far during the current rehabilitation process. After the first accident I wanted to get back into shape too fast. First of all, I overdid the exercises my physiotherapist gave me, because I thought my body could handle it. This worked well in the beginning, but after a week progress stopped and the pains started to increase. It was really frustrating to realize that by doing too much, I had actually taken several steps back which cost me much more time....
